The Viennese are known to be more reserved than let’s say other Europeans or Americans, so a good place to hook up will be at bars, or clubs where they are losing up more. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t fascinated in getting to recognise anybody at all, but they surely are less outgoing than Spanish people. If you are going for a night out in Vienna, where must you go hunting? You may want a few tips that will aid you get started? Here’s my top 3 places:

1. Ost Klub

The name already explains it- Ost is German for east and also the motto of this club. Come here to listen numerous of the hottest music from the Balcan, Orient, and Eastern European states. The girls who come here are known to wear a good deal of pretty outragous outfits.

Where?

Schwindgasse 1, corner of Schwarzenbergplatz

Hours: Thu, Sun and public holidays 6pm- 2am, Fri&Sat 8pm-4am

U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz

2. Flex

A young and trendy audience head to this club where electronic music is pumping out the stereo.

Where?

Donaukanal/Augartenbrücke

Hours: 8pm-5am daily

U1/U2 Schwedenplatz

3. Empire club

Empire club is paying attention to the trends in the global club szene and with great success putting them into effect in Vienna. It`s a good place to dance the night away. This is a very good place to chase after girls due to the girl/boy ratio. Why? The club has a policy of letting girls get a free entry.

Where?

Rotgasse 9, 1010 Wien

Hours: Thu 7pm-4am, Fri-Sat 9pm-6am

Review“To discover lesser-known quarters of the City of Light, consult Quiet Corners of Paris… This illustrated handbook takes you to often-overlooked parts of the city: it is concealed villas, winding lanes, cobblestone courtyards and Renaissance fountains.” –Frank Wagner, Copley News Service

“Yes, noisy, bustling Paris has it is quiet corners, and this beautiful book describes them in loving detail. Most of the places noted here are out of doors and open to the public. The places range from museum courtyards and royal gardens to 15th Century cloisters and tiny passageways to the back streets and lanes of the respective neighborhoods. Some widely known and esteemed internet sites are here (Luxembourg Gardens) but so are unknown treasures such as the Irish Cultural Center, housed in a townhouse applied by the Irish Catholic collegiate community since 1775, or Paris’ lesser-known islands. And few places are as quiet as the city’s evocative cemeteries.” -The Chicago Tribune

“Many tour books promise to deliver “secrets” and never do. This one does. Many times…More than 80 suggestions. Here’s the Eiffel Tower. Let’s take a boat ride along the Seine. Ah, the Champs Elysees. Five museums on the list — let’s whip through them. And, late at night, we’ve got to find that nightclub where the girls kick up their …heels.

Others — that’s my brood and me — go to Paris for the quiet. We sit in cafes for hours. We settle on park benches. We take long walks on nearly empty streets. It’s still Parisland, just another kind: an open-air library, a set for dreaming, an urban pillow for outdoor naps.

It’s hard to imagine that a book called “Quiet Corners of Paris” would be a shocker, but this sometime Parisian was shocked — and thrilled — by what’s in these pages. Many tour books promise to deliver “secrets” and never do. This one does. Many times.

Its secret: It does not stick to the four or five arrondissements where tourists congregate. Instead, it draws on the entire city — and thus challenges you to leave your literal “comfort zone” and get out to neighborhoods where real Parisians can be found. And more: really quiet zones: villas, gardens, courtyards, fountains and passages.

The book is ordered by arrondissement, which means you start with the familiar. In the 1st arrondissement, we find the courtyard of the Louvre (check!), the Galerie Vero-Dodat (gotcha!), the garden of the Palais-Royal (good times!) and the Place Dauphine (been to almost every restaurant there!). But no sooner have we hit the 3rd arrondissement than the unknown intrudes: the Saint-Gilles-Grand-Veneur garden, Karsten Greve’s art gallery, the Billettes Cloister. Oh, the time I could have frittered away in those beautiful settings.

I was charmed by the garden of a daycare center in the 4th. Busy and noisy? Not on weekends. I knew nothing of a library that specializes in the decorative arts; it’s in a lovely mansion and has a tranquil garden. The Irish Cultural Center: how crowded might that be? And it’s nice to know that the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles not only has a “flower-filled, tree-studded” garden, it’s also “modestly” priced.

Have you visited the Arena of Lutece, the city’s largest Gallo-Roman ruin? I haven’t. And while I love obscure museums, the mansion dedicated to Delacroix eluded me. As did the garden of the French Lutheran Church in the 7th. And the rowboats you can rent at the bois de Vincennes in the 12th.

The further from Parisland, the bigger the surprises. I want to visit the Cité des Arts, in the 14th, where “the creme of the modern art world” lived. The “tract” homes of the Villa Santos-Dumont in the 15th are a welcome walk through time into Modernism’s best representatives. I could easily spend an hour watching men play pétanque at the Square Blomet in the 15th. A Buddhist garden and Balzac’s house in the 16th — there’s a reason to take the Métro.

More than 80 suggestions. All very high on my list of “musts” the next time I find myself in Paris with a good book, a fresh cigar, a few hours to kill — and no desire to be anywhere near the Mona Lisa.

Evon
I will keep my review uncomplicated, like this book. There is a lot of information packed into this little book. Instead of focusing on the usual tourist sights, the author points out some of the beautiful, quaint parks, gardens and museums. The book also shows other out of the way places that the usual travel books don’t. With the exception of 1 site (Musee Eugene Delacroix), all the sights shown are free to the public. If you are going to visit Paris, this is a great little guide book when searching for different places to see. If you want to go to Paris some day, this is a great book to dream by. It’s packed with beautiful pictures. I just loved it!

Conley
This is a sweet little book. I wish I’d had it when I lived in Paris. It reveals many wonderful quiet spots, places for picnics and contemplation, and peace in that busy city. As a tourist to Paris, you probably won’t value it as much–you’ll want to be out in the busy, soaking it all up. But for anyone who lives in Paris, or is going to spend a long time there, I’d recommend it. And for those of us who just like to read about Paris, in between visits, it’s a great book, well written and warm.

Some say that traveling alone is the only way to go. Some of the best places to travel alone to are the same as any other place, it’s what you do when you get there that matters. The vantages are endless-go where ever you want when you want to, do whatsoever action you want, and spend only a little bit of money.

One of the best places to travel alone to is Costa Rica. The humans are very friendly, the beaches are gorgeous, the mountains are beautiful, and they have very nice accommodations, great feed and a great climate. Although from time to time a single woman will draw an curious look now and then.

Another city to visit is Prague in the Czech Republic because it’s a very historical city. The old world architecture is awesome. The city is a treasure trove, with museums, music, art galleries and theaters. Some say Prague is best experienced if you’re with a lover since it’s very romantic, but it’s ok to be alone.

Some say one of the best places to travel alone to is Ireland in the off-season. If you don’t like the hustle and bustle of other vacationers, April to October, is best time to travel to go. Sign up for a Celtic Spirit Journey with international teacher and writer, Mara Freeman, it is enlightening!

Rome is one of the most finelooking places you may ever visit, full of history, arts, and culture. The best way to receive pleasure from the Eternal City is to hire a local Official Tour Guide which will lead you through it is concealed and captivating treasures.

If you’re into adventure, then you must visit Alaska. There is something for everybody, the scenery is stunning, and the locals in truth undertake to make your visit special. Since Alaska is known for it is population of bears, you don’t want to get lost, so book a tour guide to show you the sights.

Until you have had a gondola ride on the Venice canal, you haven’t ridden anything! Italy is one of the best places to travel alone because if you pick the gondola with a musician on it, you’ll have the pleasure of galore very fine music while you take in all the glorious sights of Venice.

For the buying goods and cuisine alone, New York City is worth experiencing. The Broadway shows, visiting Times Square, the buying goods and climbing to the top of the Empire State Building is well worth the cash you’ll spend there.

The most important thing to do not forget is to take pleasure in yourself, keep safe and buy a lot of souvenirs

My first choice continues to be the Eyewitness series in their TOP 10 format … in this case, “Top 10 Prague”. I would suggest that it be complemented by the somewhat more comprehensive “Prague”.

The Top 10 format is entirely self-explanatory, a list of Top 10 sights that are must-sees for any first time tourist in a given city or country. Depending on the destination, the Top 10 lists become increasingly more detailed and may include, for example, top 10 churches, museums, children’s attractions, festivals, events, restaurants, cafés, pubs, parks and so on. In the second half of each book, the information is effectively repeated but organized by neighbourhood, so the prospective tourist might make the most effective use of limited time touring a given area in a city or country without missing anything of interest.

The information is all linked to beautiful photographs and allows a potential traveler to make sensible choices in advance according to his or her personal tastes. Most telling is the fact that each Top 10 title makes no attempt to be comprehensive. It is absolutely, positively aimed at the first time tourist attempting to do a one shot overview of a city or country. If that is your objective, there is little question that the DK Eyewitness Top 10 series is the hands down winner against all the competition – Blue Guide, Green Guide, Rough Guide, National Geographic, Frommer or Michelin.

One suggestion for the Top 10 Prague Guide in particular. The pull out map is a WONDERFUL idea but it should be a simple rectangle. The map provided has a wierd, obscure shape with some internal corners that are certain to tear in the stress of repeated opening and closing. Two other minor criticisms – first, some of the addresses for stores and restaurants are incorrect – outdated, I dare say – but, search as I might, I simply couldn’t find the stores I was looking for (Obchod pod Lampou and Galerie Boema stand out in my memory). Last but not least, it’s all well and good to list the Top 10 Palaces as notable sights but, if they have been converted to embassies, for example, then clearly they are closed to the public. That, of course, means that they are of interest only from a historic point of view and possibly represent an external photo op. Personally, I’d rather hear about palaces or old homes that I can actually visit and tour.

That said, the DK Eyewitness Travel series still stands head and shoulder above the competition. Highly recommended.

Why was the battle of Gettysburg important? The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most substantial events in the American history. It was one of the most influential battles that led to the result of the civil war. The battle happened in Pennsylvania and the Union was declared the winner. There were hundreds of wounded and dead soldiers in the Battle of Gettysburg. It is considered as one of the most bloodied battles in the history of the United States. Many people are mesmerized to recognise the reason why was the Battle of Gettysburg important.

Why was the Battle of Gettysburg important? It is essential since it became one of the turning points in the civil war for the United States. The Potomac soldiers were lead by General Gordon Meade and they were competent to defeat the Northern Virginian army whose leader was General Robert Lee.

Why was the Battle of Gettysburg essential in terms of political significance? The Union was competent to defeat the Confederate group and because of this the Union was capable to gain control of the political clout of the confederates. The Union was likewise capable to lead the army of General Lee. The victors in the Battle of Gettysburg got the power to rule all of the United States.

Why was the Battle of Gettysburg important for the United States? It is substantial because as President Abraham Lincoln has said that battle changed the meaning of why wars will have to be undertaken. He explained this statement in his Gettysburg Address. He made this speech at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

The Gettysburg battle happened in three days. It started in the firstborn of July, 1863 until the third of July. The Union was composed of ninety three thousand and nine hundred twenty one soldiers and the Confederates had almost seventy two thousand soldiers. The Union lost twenty three thousand and fifty five soldiers and the Confederates lost twenty three thousand and two hundred thirty one men. One of the fiercest moments in the battle happened on the third day when twelve thousand soldiers from the Confederate strength fought the soldiers of the Union strength at the cemetery area. The Union attacked back with much artillery. The Confederates lost so a lot of men and so they had to retreat and give up.

The casualties reached a total of fifty one thousand in all. All the soldiers who passed away in that battle were laid to rest in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. It was later changed to Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Planning: In Edinburgh, the Hogmanay Food Fair or upscale butchers, such as John Saunderson, are good places to stock up on goodies. www.edinburgh.org, www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk

Dupont
This book is sooo cool! I have been to many of the places they write about, and find the book to be amazingly well researched. I plan to use it as a travel planner supplement for future trips because you can’t get this kind of information out of a regular travel book. Plus, it a great daydreaming tool. One can flip the pages and imagine wonderful places to visit and eat. I especially appreciate the way they cover all types of dining experiences — it’s not just about expensive, 5-star restaurants. Each page contains loads of information that connects the food to the context of the place. These pieces were clearly written by insiders, people who know the area and can guide you to authentic, memorable experiences.

Strasbaugh
Who doesn’t want to eat their way around the world? I love this book, it takes care of my holiday shopping list and is hugely entertaining. Food Journeys captures the essence of why I/most people travel — they want to eat great food in gorgeous locales with interesting people. The photos are beautiful and the info is rich and very helpful. Hadn’t thought of food festivals as a good travel destination. Also looking forward to hunting down the best baguette. Lots of fun ideas here. Am glad someone finally made a book like this.

And imagining what I am going to eat when I go to places is really almost as good as being there (not really, but it does help to build the anticipation.) I found myself lingering over the Lists of 10 things in many of the categories. It’s the kind of compare and contrast thing that really gets you thinking. The cheese tours of France and the Literary Watering holes of the world particularly, particularly are begging to be implemented.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
My first “Discover” book.
By MussSyke
This is my first book in the “Discover” line by Lonely Planet. Before I had it, I had assumed they were trying to reach every segment of the market, including those who prefer the DK Eyewitness line. I also couldn’t help but smile at the irony of this company – proud of their backpacker/environmentalist/hippie heritage – slowly trying to take over the world, one market at a time.

Actually, I am pleasantly surprised. Although it has a lot of pictures, it doesn’t really have the same feel as the DK line (disclaimer: I haven’t read one of them in a long time). Whereas DK shows you where to go step-by-step, picture-by-picture so you don’t get lost, the Discover just sort of acts like half “coffee-table book”/half guide book.

For me, that is actually perfect when you’re in the planning phase of a trip or when you’re trying to decide where to go. It gets you browsing even when you’re not in the mood to read (and let’s face it – the middle of most travel books is always tough reading), it gives you plenty of idea what you can expect to see, and you’ll inevitably read more than if you’re stuck with a huge block of dense text in front of you. …Before my last vacation, I only had a regular LP from that brief blip in time when the whole book was blue and white, and I just couldn’t get myself to read that thing until I was actually at my destination, which made it overall less helpful.

Understand that much of the text – especially in the back – is a direct copy from multiple other books by LP.

It loses a star for having the usual Lonely Planet problems – too much stating their beliefs as facts (regarding “green” matters), and just talking about it too much in general, using creative superlatives where there should be none, and an absurd fear of driving, which they also push on the reader, probably to push the agenda stated earlier in this paragraph. To be fair, these are common problems for many guidebooks.

I like this book, as it gives me a great intro to and gets me excited about going to Peru. I’m not really sure it’ll be the only book I take along when I go, but for now, in the pre-planning phases, it’s pretty nice to have around.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful.
Get this book to become independent traveler
By Pikmin
Discover Peru contains extensive coverage of Peru’s jewel: Machu Picchu including health precaution (altitude sickness) when you arrive in Cuzco, the town near Machu Picchu. Don’t waste money buying pre-packaged tour from U.S. travel agent. With this book in hand, you can gather all information to be an “independent” traveler. Go with your own leisure. If you have no time to research sightseeing, this book has web references to several local tour agents (hopefully they charge less).

Inca trail around Machu Picchu is also discussed in about 3 pages. But the information may not be enough if you plan to take the 43km 4-day mountain trekking. Get a specialized book of Machu Picchu trekking. Web references of Peru mountain guide association are provided.

Peru is not just Machu Picchu! Discover Peru has a dedicated section of travelling to the jungle of Amazon Basin. However, I think the prices of jungle trekking and river cruises are too high.

Hawkins
I have to give Lonely Planet some credit – their Discover series has really stepped it up, and taken a bite out of DK and Rough Guides with more photos, a top highlights section and their wealth of information for the independent traveler.

The book is broken down into 6 sections, each containing the extremely valuable highlights and suggested itineraries. It also has a list of things not to miss at the beginning of the book, so you can feel like you’ve properly “done” Peru. I’m a bit disappointed by the seeming lack of coverage for Machu Picchu, but I’d probably buy a specific book just for that trek alone.

If you wanted to start planning a trip to Peru, this is a great resource to start with and you’ll probably keep this in your hand for most of the trip. But like any trip, always consult another source just in case.

The progressed city of Rome, as legend goes, was built on seven hills. A city that is accustomed to alien influences, it is known for it architectural treasures. There is a lot more to Rome than we know. Here are a good deal of interesting facts to give you an clear or deep perception into the Roman culture, it is history and treasures.

1. The birth of the Eternal City, Rome, which was founded in 753BC, is celebrated each year by Romans on the 21st of April. Celebrations include fireworks, gladiator shows, established Roman banquets and parades.

2. The Pantheon which was built in 27 B.C. by Marcus Agrippa is the only monument belonging to ancient Rome that still remains intact. What is even lesser known, is that it entombs Italy’s king Vittorio Emanuele II, and his successor, Umberto I.

3. A park in Rome is named the “Park of the Monsters.” Not because it is a haunted place but because it is full of grotesque figures like a crude Hercules slaying an Amazon and an ogre’s face with a mouth so huge that persons may even walk through it!

4. The Baths of Caracalla altho in a bad state now, were once in their prime days disseminate all over 27 acres and could handle 1,600 bathers at any given time. Built in the 3rd century, they are the biggest survivors of Rome’s imperial era.

5. Rome has a museum which is wholly devoted to pasta. The Pasta Museum is a one of it is kind around the world and showcases dissimilar pasta-making machines, as well as paintings related to pasta by contemporary artists.

6. St Peter’s Basilica inside Vatican City is the biggest church ever constructed.

7. Rome’s Coliseum, a big amphitheatre which could seat 50,000 people is one amid the Seven Wonders of the World.

8. The Monumental Cemetery of the Capuchin Brothers has applied the bones of over 4,000 Capuchin monks, galore skeletons wholly intact, to develop symbolic works of art in it is series of chapels.

9. The Vatican Museums is a big museum complex with over 1,000 museums and galleries like the Gallery of Tapestries and Etruscan and Egyptian Museums that are full of masterworks collected by the successive popes. It is the world’s greatest museum complex.

10. St. Peter’s Basilica was a structure that stood for almost 1,000 years until it neared collapse and was rebuilt by 1500s and 1600s. It is an overpowering structure which displays the work of galore of Italy’s greatest artists like Raphael, Michelangelo, and Maderno.
